Day 10: Into the silence

I was listening to an audiobook as I knitted last night about a woman agent in World War 2 where the there were quite significant sections of back story about the intelligence activities immediately prior to Pearl Harbour. No internet, no cell phones, no email – to overcome the chapter of accidents and delays that led to the communication sequence going wrong (quite apart from some deliberate actions)

Several months ago I was contemplating my grandfather working for the old Department of Works in the 1940’s and 50’s and what his job as a logistics manager would have been like. Typed letters with carbon paper, having to rely on the mail service. Telegrams for urgent notifications. Limited telephones in some circumstances. Can’t you just feel the pace of your life slowing down?

We are just so “always on” – my work phone streams my email and messages so I can check for responses at any time of the day or night. Most of us have replied or seen a reply sent either very late at night or very early in the morning as we aim to get ahead of the information flow.

Some weekends I try and disconnect from all the tools I have that connect me via the internet. And in the spirit of my Lent journey I might limit my posts to 5 a week to honour my internet sabbaths. On that topic  this is a great article on the value of that Social media sabbatical
