Today was a hard day as it was the anniversary of Dad’s death. We were all a bit anxious about how we’d cope – especially Mum who was leading two workshops. There was the odd moment but it actually worked out well as it stopped the “this time last year” litany that was kept threatening at the edge of consciousness.
The three of us went to Mass at St Joseph’s Cathedral in Dunedin in the evening, which kind of triggered one of my obsessive curiosities. St Joseph’s is one of Petrie’s last Gothic designs although his first using concrete. You walk into to soaring gothic arches and the chocolate box colouring of stained glass saints made in Munich. Then you look to the front expecting an equally inspiring rose window – and it just isn’t.
The window shape is there but the glass is pale tone of geometric shapes. A 1920’s art nouveau rather than a coherent late Victorian style. It is completely mystifying especially as even an extensive Google search over dinner came no closer to explaining the anomaly. Although I did get quite imaginative about how such a deviation could have happened.
I do think that the discipline of writing for this project is helping strengthen my writing muscle so I am increasingly tempted to write more.
